Table Setting Guide
How to Set a Table:
Basic, Casual & Formal Table Settings
By Lulu Maison New York · September 2026 · 5 min read
A beautifully set table is one of the quietest ways to say welcome.
Knowing how to set a table is not about rigid rules. It is about giving every guest what they need, exactly where they expect to find it, so the evening can flow without a second thought.
Whether it is a Tuesday dinner or a long Saturday gathering, this guide walks you through the three table settings every host should know: basic, casual and formal.
Setting No. 01
The Basic Table Setting —
Everyday Elegance
This is the setting for everyday meals, and the foundation for every other. Start with a placemat, then place the dinner plate in the center. The fork goes to the left of the plate. The knife goes to the right, blade facing the plate, with the spoon beside it. The water glass sits just above the knife, and the napkin rests to the left of the fork.
Simple, balanced and quietly polished. Nothing more is needed.

Styling Tip
An easy way to remember: “fork” and “left” both have four letters, so the fork goes on the left. “Knife,” “spoon” and “right” all have five, so they go on the right.
Setting No. 02
The Casual Table Setting —
For Dinners with Friends
When a meal has more than one course, the casual table setting builds on the basic one. Add a salad fork to the outside of the dinner fork, since utensils are used from the outside in. If soup is served, place the bowl on the dinner plate and the soup spoon to the far right. A wine glass joins the table just to the right of the water glass.
For a relaxed dinner, the napkin can move to the center of the plate, finished with a napkin ring. It is the first thing your guests touch, and the easiest way to make a table feel personal.

The Napkin Question
Where Does the Napkin Go? —
Three Elegant Answers
To the left
Folded beside the forks. The classic choice for basic settings.
On the plate
Centered and finished with a napkin ring. Our favorite.
On the charger
For formal dinners, placed on the charger before the first course.
Once guests are seated, the napkin moves to the lap. If someone leaves the table during the meal, it rests on the chair. At the end of the evening, it is placed loosely to the left of the plate.
Remember B-M-W: bread on the left, meal in the middle, water on the right.
Setting No. 03
The Formal Table Setting —
For the Evenings That Matter
A formal table setting begins with a charger, the decorative plate that stays in place while each course is served on top of it. Forks are arranged on the left, knives and spoons on the right, always in the order they will be used, from the outside in.
The bread plate sits above the forks with a small butter knife laid across it. Dessert utensils rest horizontally above the plate. Glasses are grouped above the knives: water first, then red and white wine. A place card above the dessert utensils completes the setting.
A formal table should feel generous, never crowded. If there is no room for a utensil, it is brought out with its course.
